MACON, MO --
Recycling is about to get a whole lot easier in Macon County.
Macon County Economic Development has received a grant from the Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District Region G to educate the community and make recycling easier.
With a ten percent match by the board, the county will have about $25,000 to place four trailers in rural communities to collect recyclables.
The new recycling program will be run by Macon Diversified Industries, which is the sheltered workshop that employs disabled workers.
“We were very excited to hear that Macon Economic Development offices were interested in helping us out. It's always exciting to see the city and the county take an interest in a non-profit, especially ours since we do provide jobs for disabled workers, and a double whammy if you will, that we recycle for the community,” said Dede Spidle, Production Supervisor at Macon Diversified Industries.
Macon Diversified is the only recycling center within 30 miles.
“When you make recycling easy and convenient for people then they choose to participate. So that's why we're trying to do, we're trying to make it easy, we're trying to educate people on the benefits of recycling, and hopefully we'll have a good turnout of people that want to contribute their recyclables to the sheltered workshop,” said Executive Director Denise Bennett, Macon County Economic Development.
The sheltered workshop will be responsible for picking up the recyclables from the trailers, which will be located in La Plata, Bevier, and Atlanta. The fourth trailer will be shared by Callao and New Cambria.
The sheltered workshop will take your cardboard, paper, plastics, metals, and aluminum cans.
Macon Diversified is hoping to expand its recycling division and add up to five more jobs as more and more recyclables come in.
Macon Diversified currently has four to six employees working in the recycling shop.
