Woman says deer, lightning caused car crash

A Morning Sun woman was arrested on Sunday after the car she was driving struck three parked vehicles near Mediapolis.

 

The Des Moines County Sheriff's Office says Susan Delzell, 50, was arrested for several charges including Driving while Revoked and Accident Causing Injury.

 

Delzell told police that she remembers striking at least one vehicle after a deer ran out in front of her and a lightning bolt struck near her.

She claims to tried unsuccessfully to contact someone at the residence, but eventually was forced to walk 10 miles home.

 

She eventually was transported to a hospital by private vehicle.

08-07-11      05:06    Mediapolis Road/Iowa City Road (15164 Mediapolis Road), traffic accident, injury, arrest;

 

Driver    Susan Delzell, age 50, Morning Sun, IA, arrest, Driving While Revoked, Accident Causing Injury, No Proof of Insurance, Failure to Maintain Control

 

Driver left the scene of accident and later stated that she was driving wb on Mediapolis Road, a deer ran out in front of her and a bolt of lightning struck close by.  She stated she remembered going through the ditch and struck a parked car.  Driver stated that she got out of the car and knocked on the door of the residence but no one answered the door.  She stated that she then walked appx 10 miles home.

 

Her vehicle struck the back of a parked vehicle owned by Konnor Meth at 15164 Mediapolis, which was then picked up off the ground and hit the passenger side of vehicle owned by Kermit Meth 15164 Mediapolis Road, which was then pushed into vehicle owned by Katrina Meth 15164 Mediapolis Road.  All vehicles that were struck were legally parked in the driveway of the residence.  

 

Driver taken to Iowa City Hospital by private vehicle.
