KEOKUK, IOWA -- Donations are being sought to help care for a dog after he was rescued from an abandoned tar pit in Keokuk.
The Keokuk Daily Gate City is reporting that a person heard the dog's cries on July 25 and reported it to authorities. Police officers and Keokuk's animal control officer then rescued the 15-pound beagle-dachshund mix.
Jean Meyer, of Keokuk Animal Services, says only one side of the dog's face was above the tar, which had liquefied in the summer heat.
Animal control officer Eric Lindley says rescuers used boards positioned underneath the dog to pry him from the tar. The dog was taken to a local vet where he was cleaned and treated.
KTVO's sister station KHQA reports the little guy is now known as Tar Dog. Friends of Keokuk Animal Services is seeking donations to help pay for the dog's care. Anyone interested in contributing to Tar Dog's care can send donations to: FOKAS, P.O. Box 1181, Keokuk, IA. Or contact Jean Meyer at (319) 524-1127 or (319) 526-5421.
