KIRKSVILLE, MO -- What are the restrictions at residential facilities for seniors due to all this heat?
Kirksville Manor Care Center gears all of their activities for the seniors to the indoors during the hot summer months.
They discourage sun exposure and provide a wide variety of indoor activities that include bingo, fly swatter balloon volleyball, music entertainment, and college students also come to provide entertainment.
The center's main focus is keeping their residents hydrated. They have several hydration stations throughout their building that give residents water and various juices.
The Manor Care Center says they have no set temperature restrictions. They pay close attention to the forecasted heat index. Cheryl Bass, Director of Social Service, said "Eighty degrees is comfortable to most of the residents. The majority of the residents are very upbeat due to the sunshine, and prefer to stay inside in their air conditioned building."
The center will be hosting an Ice Cream Social. This event is free to the public and will be held in the evening on August 26, 2011 if the outdoor temperature is in the seventies.
