ALBIA, IOWA -- The Monroe County Fair is finishing up another well attended year.

County Fair Board President Dean Bettis said that more than 1,000 people came out to Saturday night's demolition derby, allowing the board to take in more than $11,000 in one night.

On Sunday afternoon, children competed in a cookie-stacking contest, hog show, and an open fun horse show.

Volunteers says the fair is a great way to keep the youth busy in the summertime.

"It's an extended weekend party. And the kids are what it's all about," said Angela Tratchel, a Monroe County Fair volunteer.

"They have a great time. They work hard."

On Monday evening at 6 pm, there will be a livestock auction, where kid participants can expect a hefty paycheck for their animals.  Earlier in the day, there will be a dog show, along with a cat, rabbit, and poultry show.

After the fair is over, Bettis says he's looking forward to the construction of a new hog barn, if the board can collect enough donations to pay for the $50,000 building costs.
