SIGOURNEY, IOWA -- Iowa State Patrol Captain Mike Winter tells KTVO that Keokuk County Sheriff Jeff Shipley has been arrested and charged with drunk driving.
Winter says a State Patrol trooper pulled Shipley over around 8 p.m. Wednesday for a registration check on the vehicle he was driving.
During the check, the trooper said Shipley appeared to be under the influence.
The sheriff was arrested, taken to the Keokuk County Jail and later released on his own recognizance.
Shipley released the following statement Thursday: "I acknowledge that a criminal charge has been filed against me by the Iowa State Patrol. Being a servant of the judicial system, I am fully confident that I will be vindicated, and I respectfully ask that my case be tried in a court of law, not the media. Jeff Shipley."
This is not Shipley's first alcohol-related incident.
KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids is reporting that 2008, Shipley pleaded guilty to operating a motor boat while intoxicated on Coralville Lake outside of Iowa City.
