OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Its been almost two months since Joplin was hit by one of the worst tornadoes in history, and Heartland residents are still giving back; this time in a new way.
The Firehouse Kidz Ministry held a Christmas Toy Drive at the Ottumwa Wal-Mart Saturday. The ministry assists children all over the country.
But instead of donating the usual items like food and clothing, they wanted to create a Christmas in July for Joplin children. Volunteers passed fliers to shoppers asking them to buy a toy inside and drop it off or donate cash contributions.
Firehouse Kidz Director Jeff Diltz said it is worth seeing a smile on a child's face.
"That's where the concept came from was to be able to have Christmas in July. When you go there, those kids have nothing left. So we just want to be able to go down there and bless these kids. It's an awesome thing to see a kids face light up when they don't have anything and you bring them something. It's a neat thing."
The drive was a big success in Kirksville last weekend; generating over $1,000 in cash and $4,000 in toys. They will collect toys for a couple of more weeks before taking them to Joplin July 23.
