OTTUMWA -- Traditions over the Fourth of July weekend can be swimming at a pool or eating some BBQ.

One of the more popular activities has to be viewing fireworks; however, fireworks are illegal in the state of Iowa.

Despite laws against them, fireworks will light up the skies of Iowa this weekend.  Ottumwa Police Chief Jim Clark says residents who are found to be in possession of fireworks can face up to a $500 fine.

“Obviously if they’re being used late at night we’re going to tend to be more strict,” said Clark.

The Ottumwa police department will also be patrolling the Greater Ottumwa Park during Monday’s fireworks display by the city.  If officers see fireworks they will start confiscating the materials.  Clark understands the celebrations but just asks the public to use good judgment if they do use fireworks this weekend.

“We’re not naïve to think that people aren’t.  If they are going to do them at least be courteous to your neighbors and don’t do them late at night.”
