OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Central Park in Ottumwa was turned into a patriotic event Monday evening as the annual signing of the Declaration of Independence took place. The event, sponsored by the Wapello County Republican Party, had a great turn-out.

But the signing was not the only reason for the gathering; members from Iowa’s Tea Party came to educate the crowd that gathered about the upcoming elections here in Iowa.

“There are people who don't want a balanced budget, and for families that are signing their paycheck away to higher gas prices and higher food prices, it doesn't make sense for their budgets to have to be in-line. Government does have to be in-line, because we are the ones giving them the money to do it,” said Ryan Rhodes, Chairman of the Iowa Tea Party.

Rhodes informed KTVO that many he has spoken to are not happy with the size of government. He believes that the federal government needs to let the states decide what is in their best interest.

“These are not radical ideas like someone wants to say; these are common sense reasons and I think anyone that articulates that will figure that out,” said Rhodes.

No matter what your political affiliation, the Iowa Caucus is only eight months away; and that means that the 2012 Presidential Election is right around the corner.
