MAHASKA COUNTY, IOWA -- A weekend domestic assault call ended in a high speed chase and the ramming of a Mahaska County Sheriff's car.

On Saturday, Mahaska County Deputies were dispatched to 2613 Burlington Road in rural Mahaska County to investigate a domestic dispute.

When deputies attempted to apprehend Arthur James Wessels, on domestic assault charges,  the 64-year-old man fled the scene.

Deputy Doug McMillan caught up with Wessels in his vehicle later Saturday afternoon, Wessels then attempted to evade McMillan by fleeing into Eveland Access Park.

Wessels was apprehended at gun point but not before he attempted to push McMillan’s car into the Des Moines River with his own vehicle.

Wessels is charged with Attempted Murder, Domestic Assault, Willfull Injury,  and a variety of other traffic charges.

He is being held in the Mahaska County Jail on $82,000 bond.

The female victim, Shari Lynn Thompson, 39, is also facing charges from the incident, including assault on a police officer.
