KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Several Officers from the Kirksville Police Department as well as the Adair County Sheriff's Office will be hosting a Candlelight Vigil at the South Lawn Adair County Courthouse in Kirksville. The Candlelight Vigil is one of many commemorative events taking place in the nation's capital during National Police Week 2011.

This event will be Friday May 13th, 2011 at 7 p.m.

Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wilson will be giving a short speech, followed by a moment of silence and the playing of bagpipes. They are expecting a crowd to come out to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It's very important for our community to come together and support our fallen heroes" These brave men and women have sacrificed their lives for our safety," Larry Logston.

Update 5-13-2011 9:30 pm:

A candlelight vigil honored fallen heroes Monday night.

At the Adair county courthouse the Kirksville police, Adair County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement gathered together in memory of law enforcers killed or wounded in the line of duty.

The families and friends of law enforcement officers lit candles to commemorate those fallen.

In 2010 there were 5 policemen shot and killed in Missouri, and more than 150 nationwide.

The vigil is part of National Police Week, which included a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Communities across the nation held similar ceremonies tonight.

Adair County Prosecutor Matt Wilson said it's vital to honor those who have been killed in the line of duty.

"It's important so that our community and the people who are being protected don't ever forget those who sacrificed and gave their lives so that we can walk down the street safely,” Wilson said.

Several organizations are raising funds to honor fallen police officers.
