Update 5-13-2011 9:30 pm:
A candlelight vigil honored fallen heroes Monday night.
At the Adair county courthouse the Kirksville police, Adair County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement gathered together in memory of law enforcers killed or wounded in the line of duty.
The families and friends of law enforcement officers lit candles to commemorate those fallen.
In 2010 there were 5 policemen shot and killed in Missouri, and more than 150 nationwide.
The vigil is part of National Police Week, which included a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Communities across the nation held similar ceremonies tonight.
Adair County Prosecutor Matt Wilson said it's vital to honor those who have been killed in the line of duty.
"It's important so that our community and the people who are being protected don't ever forget those who sacrificed and gave their lives so that we can walk down the street safely,” Wilson said.
Several organizations are raising funds to honor fallen police officers.
