KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Hundreds of drivers will soon have to find a new route when driving into Kirksville.
MoDOT will be shutting down a section of Hwy 6 East. The closure will take place where the new alternate route Hwy 63 will intersect.
Now many drivers will be forced to use county roads in order to get around. But, some worry those roads won't be able to handle the traffic flow.
So the question is, how are the county commissioners preparing for the wear and tear of these roads?
"We probably won't do anymore than what we did when they shut Hwy11 down and we asked for help from mo-dot which that don't work," said presiding commissioner Stan Pickens. "The contractor however; last year whenever they did shut 11 down they did help with a little gravel and maintained the roads a little bit, but of course we had to do the biggest part of it."
So what's does Pickens advise drivers to do?
"Travel on Hwy 11 as much as possible. Take route J over from Brashear to Hwy 11 and bring it in." Pickens said.
Mo-DOT plans to shut that part of the Hwy 6 East sometime in the beginning of June and it will remain closed for about four weeks depending on weather.
