KIRKSVILLE, MO --
There's a bumpy road ahead for the Northeast Missouri Community Action Agency.

Federal budget cuts have forced the agency to downsize from six offices to only one.

The service centers in Edina, Lancaster, Memphis, Kahoka, and the Kirksville location at Devlin Place have all been closed.

Now anyone who needs services will have to call or mail applications to the central office in downtown Kirksville.

Even harder times are ahead for Community Action next year.

“We're very concerned that there will be a 50 percent cut next year. We're going to do everything that we can to encourage legislators not to make these cuts in community action because our services are so important to low income individuals,” said Penny Miles, Executive Director.

A 50 percent cut would affect services offered by community action. But for the time being, they still offer services in weatherization, Head Start, and heating and cooling assistance, just to name a few.

8.5 jobs were lost to the closings. Staff in the central office in Kirksville will have a rotating lay-off period this summer.

If you wish to utilize services offered by NMCAA, call 665-9855. Applications can be mailed to 215 N. Elson Street, Kirksville, MO 63501.
