KIRKSVILLE, MO. (AP) -- The Adair County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that on March 25, Gunner Sawyer, 11, of Novinger found a loaded, semi automatic handgun along Crest Trail southwest of Kirksville. The handgun, which had been reported missing, was returned to its grateful owner.

On April 22nd, The Adair County Sheriff, Robert T Hardwick presented Sawyer a certificate of appreciation to commend and thank him for his actions of notifying his mother of the handgun that he found, which was recovered and returned to owner. His family attended the brief presentation ceremony.

The Sheriff’s Office wishes to remind children that if they find a gun, do not touch it and immediately notify an adult. The adult should contact local law enforcement because you never know what the gun could have been used for.
