KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Growing and eating healthy foods was the main topic of the day. The University of Missouri Extension hosted a small fruit and gardening workshop in Kirksville on Thursday at the Missouri Department of Conservation Northeast Regional Office. The program offers tips on how to grow healthy foods in a home garden as well as what consumers should look for when purchasing local foods.
“Today’s workshop is to inform gardeners about some things that they can start in their garden early on” said event organizer Jennifer Schutter. “Things like peas and lettuce and spinach are all things that may start now. We’re going to talk about those, how to plant them, when to harvest them, how to eat them, things like that.”
Other topics included how to properly use raised beds, what seeds can be planted and grown together, different types of soils as well as chemical free pest control. A panel of experienced gardeners was even on hand to answer any questions. There was also a great deal of stress on purchasing local.
“Eating local and buying local is a national trend. Not only do you know where your food comes from, if you purchase local but you are supporting local farmers and the local economy. Nothing tastes better than a home grown tomato or a home grown pepper.”
Schutter said local farmers generally use natural practices helping to make foods more organic.
