KIRKSVILLE, MO --
In honor of National Heart Month, area doctors are reminding you to take good care of your ticker.
That means knowing the signs and symptoms of heart disease, which are different for men and women. While men have signs like chest pain or pain running down their arm, women have less obvious signs. They could feel fatigue, stomach pain, or be short of breath. But for either gender, diet and exercise are the best way to keep a heart healthy.
“Daily exercise of any amount, and I always tell people if you don't think you can fit an hour of exercise a day into your life, I always ask if they can fit 24 hours of being dead into their life, because quite frankly, it's that important. In our schedule in our household for example, with three small children, we always put exercise as part of our daily schedule. It's just that important to do to be healthy,” said Joshua Valtos, M.D.
Valtos adds that eating balanced meals and avoiding processed and fast food are of the utmost importance. He says a proper diet, exercise, and having a passion for life are also good ways to reduce stress and control blood pressure.
Valtos was the guest speaker at Monday’s monthly Healthy Woman meeting. Healthy Woman is a free program offered through Northeast Regional Medical Center.
