KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Some county employees are in an uproar about the pay situation regarding the blizzard of 2011.
We reported Monday that some county workers received three paid days off because the courthouse was closed, while other county employees had to work for their pay, like those in the Adair County Sheriff's Office.
We wanted to know how the city handled the same situation because City Hall was closed for one day after the blizzard hit.
City policy says that in the event of inclement weather, employees must use a vacation day or take leave without pay.
That's excluding city employees who had to work in the blizzard, like police, firefighters, and snow plow operators.
“There were people who would have and really worked hard to get to work, and then there were others who wouldn't have been able to even if they tried, and so our struggle was really with trying to balance what was fair. Just giving people the day off and then people who had to work didn't seem, again, I think that's why the policy's in place,” said City Manager Mari Macomber.
Macomber says a few city employees have jobs that involve time sensitive work, so they were given the opportunity to work the Saturday after the blizzard. So all city employees took leave time or worked an eight hour day.
City Hall hasn't been closed in at least 30 years.
