KIRKSVILLE, MO --

The Missouri Department of Transportation is gearing up for the biggest storm of the year.

MoDOT officials say the salt and sand supplies are at about two thirds of what they started with for the year, so materials are at the ready, along with MoDOT’s snow plows and motor graders.

“We're getting all of our trucks ready and prepared with this storm we're expecting significant accumulation so there's different problems we would expect with also the high winds causing some drifting and blowing snow so all of our heavy equipment that's made to eliminate drifts and other problems we're getting ready as well,” said Kevin James, MoDOT Assistant District Engineer.

The North Central region of MoDOT is also preparing for ice accumulation in some of its 14 counties. James says that means the trucks will go through more tire chains and materials. And with colder temps on the way, that will slow down the snow clearing process.
