Several Heartland lawmakers issued statements on Saturday’s tragic shootings in Tucson, Arizona.
Nineteen were shot and six lost their lives in a supermarket shooting, including a federal judge and a child. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was among those shot.
“I pray for Rep. Giffords, the other victims, and their families. I'm mad and deeply saddened that this violence is an attack not just against these innocent people, but also does real damage to all things good about our country and our democracy. And no criminal punishment will be able to fix it,” said Senator Claire McCaskill.
“I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear the news of Representative Giffords, her staff members and others involved in this tragedy. I have the distinct privilege of working with Congresswoman Giffords as a member of the House Armed Services Committee. She is a great colleague and a fine public servant. It is unspeakable that such a tragedy occurred while she was meeting with her constituents, whom she serves with distinction and honor. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family, and the families of those affected by this senseless act of violence,” said Congressman Dave Loebsack.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Representative Gabrielle Giffords, her family, her staff and her constituents. I am deeply troubled by this senseless attack on a member of Congress, her staff and the folks in Tucson, Arizona. Violence like this should not and will not be tolerated in our country,” said U.S. Rep. Blaine Leutkemeyer.
