KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- This Friday, December 31, is the last day you can pay taxes on real estate and personal property.  That includes your house, car, livestock, or any other personal property.

If you don't pay on time, you could face interest charges of at least 7 percent, plus 2 percent for every month you are overdue.

"We mailed them a bill back in October, we mailed them out on Oct. 26, I believe this year and if people did not receive a bill they need to contact the Assessor's office or the Collector's office immediately because there's something wrong somewhere,” said Adair County Collector David Erwin.

KTVO checked with county offices all over the Heartland. All of them said they will be open during regular hours on New Year’s Eve.

You can also send your payment in the mail, as long as it's postmarked by December 31.

“We recommend that people use the mail we do honor postmarks if you find that you can’t get here in person.  Just simply check your tax, double check the addition that we have sent you, write a check for that amount and drop it in the mail.  Make sure it’s postmarked by midnight, December the 31st," Erwin said.

Erwin also said most people have paid already, at least in Adair County.

"For the 2010 year we had just over $9.9 million and we had charges for personal property taxes to collect of just over $2.7 million.  As of the close of business yesterday, which was Tuesday, we had collected just over 67 percent of that total and we have yet to receive quite a bit of mail and we'll be open today, tomorrow, and Friday for the rest of it,” he said.

The Adair County Collector can be reached at (660) 665-3481.  For a complete list of County Collector phone numbers, click here.
