KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Missouri Senator Bill Stouffer
, a Republican from Napton, has filed legislation to repeal the recently passed
Proposition B
. The voter approved law creates new regulations for dog breeders in the Show-Me State. Stouffer claims voters were misled and that the state law will not help prevent the abuse of dogs.
“I think one of the things that most people are not aware of is Prop B actually drastically lowers the standards that we have in the state of Missouri” said Stouffer. “They (voters) were told Missouri didn’t have standards for dog breeders. We actually have one of the best
laws in the country. There’s a lot of higher restrictions in present law than there is on Prop B. I think the easiest thing to do is to repeal Prop B and then if we need to make some adjustments for present law, we can.”
On November 2, Missourians voted for Proposition B, 997,870 votes to 936,190 (or 51.6 percent to 48.4 percent). The approved measure limits dog breeders to 50 breeding dogs. The dogs must be fed daily, get annual veterinary care and not be bred more than twice every 18 months.
“My gut feeling is that the best thing to do is to repeal it and then if we need to strengthen our laws in other places we certainly can but I think Prop B does not do what is advertised. I think we need to at least get the standard up to where they were” said Stouffer.
