KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A runway requirement mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration is going to cost Kirksville’s Airport over $91,000. Just after seven Thursday morning the process of stripping the old markings from the runway.
Airport Operator Ed Turner says even though this is a costly investment, the safety of folks using the airport will be improved.
“Hopefully this requirement will be that they know where they’re at; we know where they’re at…safety for the people is pretty much what it amounts to,” Turner said.
This three part project includes adding new, brighter markings and signs.
If the weather cooperates, the project should be completed tomorrow.
Hi-Lite contractors out of New York will complete the project. The company was the lowest bid of the two bids airport officials received.
Airport Operator Ed Turner told us the company has done a professional job so far.
“They have came in bright and early this morning. Got right to work. Shouldn’t be much more than a two-day project, we want it to be that way anyway,” said Turner.
Turner says there haven’t been any major problems for the pilots and only one change for flight arrivals and departures.
“They are having to use one taxiway, which is our biggest one. It’s the one that’s most commonly used though, so it’s not going to create any issues with the planes coming in and out,” explained Turner.
The project was mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to be completed by the end of the year.
