Opening weekend a success among deer hunters

NORTHEAST MISSOURI -- Hunters are gearing up for the second and final weekend of gun season. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation deer harvesting was up 14 percent statewide this past weekend. The great success was credited to Mother Nature.

“In 2009 we had horrible conditions for the second day of deer hunting which really affected the harvest”, said Northeast Missouri Conservation Agent Marsha Jones. “We’re hoping to get approximately 60 percent of the deer harvest in during that first weekend so when we have bad weather that really affects hunter success. So this year we just had a fabulous second day to the deer season. The first day was a little windy but of course we’ve had fabulous weather this week and are looking for another weekend of really good weather.”

While deer season can be enjoyable for most conservation agents enforce many rules, writing citations for those who don’t follow the law.

“The things we look for as far as violations go, we’re looking at complaints from folks who are road hunting, that’s a big complaint we get”, said Jones. “Prior to the season we’re out looking for areas to see if people have bait out. We’re in there opening weekend or the second weekend or as close as we can get to when we have to go in on those areas.”

Jones said trespassing and tagging violations are among the greatest amount of citations they issue.
