AMES, IOWA (AP) -- State transportation officials are issuing an early reminder to drivers in Iowa to be careful during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Officials say a combination of winter weather, drivers who've been drinking and other factors have proven deadly.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says over the last decade, the Thanksgiving holiday has had the highest number of traffic deaths of the six different holidays tracked by the department.

The Thanksgiving holiday runs from noon on Wednesday to midnight on Sunday.

Last year, 10 people died in traffic accidents. Three of those fatalities involved drinking drivers.
