DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Winter is approaching and state officials say they want Iowans to be prepared.

Tuesday is
Winter Weather Awareness Day in the state, designated by Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the National Weather Service. State officials say winter weather can strike at any time and Iowans should start getting ready for snow, blowing snow and ice.

Officials suggest Iowans do that by putting together an emergency supply kit for their homes and cars. Those should include water, non-perishable food, first aid kit, flashlights, radios, extra batteries, bedding or sleeping bags, fire extinguisher and non-electric can opener.
