KIRKSVILLE, MO -- It’s a new day for severe weather alerts in one local park.  A new severe weather siren has been installed at Kirksville’s Rotary Park.  The new siren was installed just in front of the aquatics center.

Kirksville’s Community Services Director Melanie Smith explained how this new siren will give the E-9-1-1 center some flexibility.

“This new one that’s behind me here actually has voice messaging as well as the original siren everyone is used to hearing. So, that will actually allow E 9-11 to put out a message to people who might be in the park to take cover in addition to the siren.  And we think that will be a really good addition,” Smith said.

The city is also relocating some of the current sirens into various City Parks including P-C Mills Park and North Park Sports Complex as well as the Kirksville School District Campus.

Smith told us that this is a welcomed addition to Kirksville’s Parks.

“We used to have a siren here at rotary park and that was taken out when the new swimming pool was put in so this essentially replaces the one that was here year’s ago,” said Smith.

The city is also relocating some of the current sirens into various City Parks and will also be testing sirens throughout the rest of this week and all of next week unless there is any inclement weather.

Smith thinks this will enhance the park’s safety.

“Well, I think it definitely improves public safety, which is the whole point.  And since the tornado went through over a year ago…you know that’s been one of our concerns is to really evaluate the systems and make sure that we’re providing people with the safest opportunity that we have,” said Smith.

The city will be testing sirens throughout the rest of this week and all of next week unless there is any inclement weather.
