DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) --
Efforts to urge Iowans to drive safely and not be distracted are winding down.
Sunday is the last day of "Drive Safely Work Week" and the Iowa Department of Transportation say national statistics show 80 percent of vehicle crashes involve some form of driver distraction.
The department says estimates find motorists make an average of 20 major decisions during each mile they drive. Iowa transportation experts offer tips to stop distracted driving. They include turning off cell phones while driving or
blocking calls.
The department issued a reminder that state law prohibits texting while driving. The department also urges parents to set rules for teen drivers and companies to educate employees about distracted driving dangers.
