JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Secretary of State Robin Carnahan often cites a $10 billion figure in her campaign speeches for the U.S. Senate.

It's the amount the Democrat says she recouped for investors who were misled by big banks and other financial institutions.

Most of that money came from nationwide settlements involving auction-rate securities. And most of that came from one case - a 2008 settlement with Wachovia Securities for which Carnahan's office was the lead negotiator.

Carnahan cites the $10 billion figure as an example of how she can stand up to powerful interests.

Her Republican rival, Congressman Roy Blunt, has not questioned the figure. Instead, he has asserted that Carnahan would regularly side with President Barack Obama if she were elected to the Senate.
