JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missouri education leaders are working to develop a plan for the future of public education in the state.

State Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro said Monday that Missouri's education performance has mirrored its geography and remained in the middle. She says the public education system must improve for Missouri to compete economically.

School board members and administrators across the state were meeting to analyze the current system and develop possible changes. Officials plan to complete initial suggestions in June and release the final recommendations in October 2011.

The project is backed by the Missouri School Boards' Association and the Missouri Association of School Administrators.
