KIRKSVILLE, MO --

According to the latest Missouri Auditor's report, the sex offender tracking system could use some work.

Some Missouri counties are having trouble with register compliance, but counties in Northeast Missouri seem to be an exception.

Every 90 days, offenders must verify their address on the sex offender registry. But, it can be a complicated system because sex offender laws are constantly changing.

“We have to hand search each and every one of those and see how the law applies to that situation, so for example when I go out here and check them and I have last week, then if there's an issue with someone not living at that particular address then I'll hand search the files that we have and also contact the highway patrol,” said Sheriff Bob Hardwick, Adair County.

The two offices will then figure out which law applies to the offender according to when they were convicted.

45 out of 47 sex offenders are compliant in Adair County. Hardwick says one of them is in an out of state prison, and the other case is under investigation.
