OTTUMWA, IOWA -- A heartland campaign stop isn't your grandma's town hall meeting.
Republican nominee for Iowa state senate, Mark Chelgren, of Ottumwa, hosted a party Friday night with music and 30 kegs of beer. The free event held at the Jimmy Jones Shelter House in Greater Ottumwa Park was a place for people to have fun and talk politics.
Chelgren said it's what the founding fathers did.
"Our founders sat around and drank beer and talked about how to make the country a better place,” said Chelgren. “So to me, it was a very natural extension to talking about politics having a drink listening to some good music.”
People who attended also had a chance to register to vote if they weren't already. Although rain came halfway through the event people still were at the park to have a drink and meet the candidate.
Chelgren provided 20 kegs of Keystone beer, 5 kegs of Blue Moon and naturally 5 kegs of Sam Adams.
