KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Some low-income residents are finding new ways to save energy and money on their electric bills. AmerenUE is offering the Multifamily Income-Qualified Program to owners or managers of low-income, federally subsidized buildings with at least three units. The program provides energy efficient replacement appliances in these units, free of charge.
On Thursday, AmerenUE officials were helping install refrigerators at Kirksville Estates. AmerenUE Customer Service Representative Annette Sweet said everyone can benefit from this program.
“Well, it’s a good situation, a win-win situation in that we benefit, as a utility company, by having some of the load reduced off of the circuit” said Sweet. “The customers that qualify benefit because they’re going to end up with a lower electric bill.”
Upgraded utilities included refrigerators, window air conditioning units, new shower heads, and CFL light bulbs. Workers also wrapped pipes with an insulation to cut back on energy use. AmerenUE officials say on average, these upgrades will save residents $125 a year and provide them with a safer and healthier living environment.
“Partnering, that is the key word, partnering” said USDA Multifamily Housing Director Pam Anglin. “Finding sources to help our multifamily housing projects that are getting older so we’re looking for third party funds to be able to revamp the apartments. By AmerenUE using their funds to provide those energy efficient appliances, we’re excited.”
