JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- State labor officials are preparing to distribute additional unemployment benefits to Missourians who qualify under the federal extension.

A law signed Thursday by President Barack Obama extends unemployment benefits for people who have been out of work for at least six months. Congress had debated the measure for about four months.

State officials say about 50,000 Missourians have had their benefits run out since June 2, when the last federal extension expired. More than 130,000 people in the state currently are getting benefits.

The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations says it's waiting for federal guidance and will notify Missourians eligible for additional benefits.
