JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro is promoting federal legislation that offers additional money for teachers.

Congress is considering legislation that would offer $10 billion in grants to school districts to avoid teacher layoffs. Federal
lawmakers have proposed paying for it by cutting $500 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Race to the Top grant program.

That has prompted veto threats from the White House.

In Missouri, state education officials are hoping for the extra money to keep teachers in classrooms.
