Iowa sees increase in homeless population

DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A new state study has found an increase in the number of homeless people in Iowa.
   
The report was done by the Iowa Institute for Community Alliances found there were 23,808 homeless people in the state and 15,351 people classified as "at risk" to become homeless during 2009. The report was done by the alliance and issued to Gov. Chet Culver and the Iowa Council on Homelessness. It was issued Tuesday.

The report found homeless people in every Iowa county. Families accounted for 14,068 of Iowa's homeless and at-risk populations.
   
It defined homeless as a person without a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence or who had a primary nighttime residence that was a supervised, temporary shelter. It also included a place that wasn't designated as a regular sleeping accommodation.
