DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Democratic Gov. Chet Culver is touting his endorsement by Planned Parenthood as evidence that Iowa woman will have a clear choice in his race with Republican Terry Branstad.
Speaking Wednesday at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland offices in Des Moines, Culver called the endorsement by the group's political offshoot proof that "this election is about big things."
Since last week's primary, Culver has focused on issues thought to be important to women. Last week he spoke of work to expand state-paid preschool, and this week he talked about women's health care issues, including abortion.
Branstad opposes state-backed preschool and abortion rights.
Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht says Wednesday's event is proof Culver is having troubling shoring up his base of supporters.
