NOVINGER, MO. -- Due to statewide budget cuts many Missouri schools are forced to cancel or cut back their summer school program.
Last week we reported that Kirksville schools will offer a reduced version of their summer school. That includes 20 days running from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with no meals served or cash incentives.
Novinger will offer a similar program but they will serve breakfast and lunch and provide bus service. Students will go to the swimming pool eight times during the four week session.
They will also offer an after school program at a cost of six dollars a day.
“The after school part is going to have to fund itself. If we have as many students show up and if they attend everyday or close to it, we should break about even,” said Novinger Schools Superintendent Bill Lake.
Lake says he hopes the total cost of summer school is $2000 or less.
They will likely have 80 students entering grades Kindergarten through seventh attend summer school. He says they may consider some students from other districts but that is undecided at this point.
Schuyler County Schools is still undecided at this point whether they will hold summer school.
“We are in the process of trying to decide if we’re going to continue to do summer school. The funding is going to be there.. possibly.. with cuts later on down the road,” said Superintendent Robert Amen.
As far as next year goes, Lake says even less money will be available unless something changes.
“I know most superintendents I’ve talked to we’re already planning on that but you can plan on a disaster but you don’t know the extent of the disaster. But I think everyone is realizing that until we can get revenues back up to where before proportionally we’re going to have less money,” said Lake.
