KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The United State’s Secret Service contacted the Kirksville Police Department to help with Wednesday’s events in Macon as President Obama plans his visit.
KPD is part of the Region B Homeland Security Response Team and will assist with HazMat issues if needed.
Members of Region B have trained for such events in the past but this is the first time they've been in this situation.
Typically they would provide law enforcement support before even preparing for a HazMat problem.
“I think we have a pretty good idea of what our plan is and what we're to do if needed. I don't think that we'll be doing anything but standing in the sunshine is at least what I hope,” said Kirksville Police Department Chief Deputy Tim King.
King says the suits and other equipment they will use Wednesday are provided thanks to federal grants.
KPD will also work with the Kirksville Fire Department and Hannibal fire and law enforcement crews.
