DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa's largest doctors' group favors easing the state's marijuana laws for health studies.

However, the Iowa Medical Society stopped short of backing broad use of pot for ill Iowans or for people who just want to get high.

The group represents about 4,600 physicians. Delegates to its annual meeting last weekend approved a resolution that supports reclassifying marijuana with a goal of studying its potential medical purposes.

In February, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy unanimously recommended that the Legislature legalize marijuana for medical uses. Legislative leaders intend to set up a committee to consider the issue.

Fourteen states have legalized medical marijuana.
