CHARITON, IOWA (AP) -- A court hearing is set for June to decide whether a 13-year-old Chariton boy accused of killing his stepfather will be tried as a youthful offender.
He's charged in juvenile court with first-degree murder in the Feb. 10 shooting death of Todd Peak. He also faces charges for allegedly trying to kill his mother and a 5-year-old girl.
A hearing on Monday was delayed. Judge Monty Franklin wrote in a court order filed Tuesday that there was insufficient time to review the report.
Another hearing is for June 22-23. If Franklin decides the boy can be tried as a youthful offender, he would be eligible for rehabilitation or punishment when he becomes an adult.
Children younger than 14 can't be tried as adults in Iowa.
The Associated Press doesn't name juveniles charged in a crime.
