KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, accompanied by the first lady Georganne Nixon, paid a visit to Kirksville on Thursday.  The Governor visited Thousand Hills State Park to help showcase the State Park Youth Corps program.  The program would employ approximately 1,000 youths, ages 17 to 24, in paid positions at one of the 85 state parks in the Show-Me state over the summer.

“The creation of the State Park Youth Corps is one of the actions we're taking and quite frankly, our actions already have shown true significant steps” said Nixon.  “Over the last year we have increased attendance at Missouri State Parks by more than 1 million people.  We have reversed that 10 year decline and are on the way up.”

Enhancing Missouri’s parks and historic sites through the State Parks Youth Corps is one of Governor Nixon’s initiatives to boost Missouri’s tourism industry.  The program is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Parks and the Missouri Department of Workforce Development.  The positions will provide young people with summer employment of 240 hours at $7.25 per hour which are being funded by the Federal Recovery Act and the Workforce Investment Act.

Governor Nixon said there is a strict deadline of Friday, April 16, to be considered for employment.  You can find more information on the State of Missouri website.
