OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa Fire Department offered well wishes to two of its long time service men.

Assistant Chief Roy Chestnut and Captain Dale Essick retired Monday after 35 and 33 years of duty respectively.

The men say they enjoyed their service and will miss the camaraderie.

“Well it's just been a great career.  I'm going to miss it and it has been a good thing and I have been with a bunch of good guys and it's sad and yet I am glad,” said Chestnut.

“It’s been a good job.  You're away from your family a lot, that’s the bad part of it, but the camaraderie of the other guys...It's just been a good job,” said Essick.

While some government positions remain open after retirement, Chief Miller says these positions will be filled.
