BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- With the self imposed deadline of March 31st, approaching fast, our Fact Finder team contacted lawmakers about what work still needs to be done in the Iowa Legislature.
Senator Keith Kreiman told Fact Finder a few bills remain active, but the last bill to be passed every session is the Standings Bill.
Sometimes noted as the “Catch-all” or “Christmas Tree” Bill, Senator Kreiman said it contains a number of items, including the budget.
The bill also includes corrections and changes to bills passed earlier in the session and bills that one Congressional body may have passed but never reached vote in the other.
Senator Kreiman told Fact Finder he does believe the shortened session is resulting in more items being attached to the Standings Bill.
“That’s very, very uncomfortable because a lot of things that are put on the Standings Bill at the end really haven’t had a lot of time and opportunity to be discussed well by not only the legislators, but also the community,” said Senator Kreiman.
Kreiman told Fact Finder the Senate passed the bill before taking Palm Sunday off. On Monday, the House will make changes, possibly adding some items and dropping other items, before sending it back to the Senate.
Kreiman tells Fact Finder if the Senate agrees to the changes the House made, the session will end. He estimates this to be late Monday night or Tuesday.
