DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- New census data show 3 million people lived in Iowa in 2009.
The new data released Tuesday found that Dallas County in central Iowa continued to draw residents, growing from 41,000 in the 2000 census to nearly 62,000. Census information also found the county just west of Des Moines had more births than deaths. Over the last year the county grew by 3.3 percent and added nearly 2,000 residents.
Dallas County has been the 28th fastest-growing county in the country over the last decade.
Linn County overcame flooding two years ago and census data show it added nearly 1,400 residents in 2009. The county is home to Cedar Rapids.
Of Iowa's 99 counties, the census information found nearly two-thirds saw population declines from 2008 to 2009.
