NOVINGER, MO --
Missouri kids might be sitting at home this summer instead of at school desks.
The government is considering cutting back on summer school funds, or cutting it completely out of the budget.
We spoke with the superintendents of both Kirksville and the Novinger schools. Both say their schools will not be able to afford a summer session without state funding, and that it will no doubt create a hardship for parents.
“The parents are very good about working with us if we can have it. I don’t see us having a two hour-three hour because I don't think that's effective but it would create some problems. I think, they see us as, we feed breakfast and lunch, snack, they pretty well know they're well taken care of here,” said Superintendent Bill Lake, Novinger schools.
It costs the Kirksville schools $900,000 to hold summer school. Novinger spent about $54,000. Lake says about $19,000 of that was out of pocket.
