WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Obama has declared a major disaster exists in Iowa as a result of December's heavy snow.

Because of Thursday's declaration, federal aid will supplement state and local recovery efforts.

Federal funds will be made available to state, local and private nonprofit organizations to repair or replace facilities damaged by snow from Dec. 23 to Dec. 27.

The funds will target the counties of Adair, Audubon, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Emmet, Franklin, Fremont, Guthrie, Harrison, Ida, Monona, Page, Pottawattamie, Sac, Shelby, Sioux, and Woodbury.

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by Iowa officials or warranted by damage assessments.

The National Weather Service reports Iowa this winter has seen two to three times as much snow as in previous years.
