DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver is shrugging off a string of recent polls showing his approval ratings sagging and him lagging behind potential Republican opponents in November.

Polls have shown Culver's approval below 50 percent and him trailing Republicans Bob Vander Plaats and Terry Branstad.

Asked about the polls Tuesday, Culver responded that the recession has hurt governors across the nation. He says Iowans are anxious, and he shares their concerns.

But Culver says he's working to solve the state's problems, and he noted plenty can change between now and the November general election.
