DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Activists held a Statehouse rally to complain about a measure that would ease restrictions on the application of liquid hog manure on frozen grounds.
Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement organized the Monday rally to raise concerns about the measure awaiting debate in the House. They argue it would allow nearly 5,500 large hog confinement operations to spread the manure, potentially endangering the state's waterways.
Current law bans large confinement operations from applying liquid manure to the ground between Dec. 21 and April 1. The measure, approved by the House Agriculture Committee, says confinement operations built before July 1, 2009, are not required to build manure storage facilities.
