DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- State officials say Iowa drivers will be getting their driver's licenses in the mail later this year because of new security measures to prevent identity theft and other crimes.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kim Snook says the new centralized process means drivers will get a temporary paper document when they renew their licenses. The actual license will then come in the mail about 30 days later.

The process is expected to be in place by the end of next month.

After applicants apply in person, information will be run through a national database before the licenses are sent out.

Nearly two dozen states use a similar process.
