KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Beta Alpha Psi, a student organization at Truman State University (TSU), is offering free assistance with simple tax returns. The annual event is offered through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
Students and citizens with low to moderate income levels are invited to complete their income tax returns with IRS certified volunteers. All returns are reviewed for accuracy by members of the Beta Alpha Psi accounting organization. Most applicants qualify for electronic filling, which ensures faster returns.
The program gives accounting students hands-on experience as they do your taxes under the supervision of graduate assistants and professors. Organizers say that having three people check your tax return also helps ensure accuracy
Those filling returns are asked to bring Social Security cards (including cards for all dependents and/or spouse); wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099_R) interest and dividend bank statements (Forms 1099); a copy of last years return, if available; and bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit. Additionally, for married couples and those filling a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign required forms.
The free tax program is being offered on Saturday, February 13, 20, 27, and March 27, from 8:00a.m. - 3:00p.m. The location is in Violette Hall on the campus of TSU.
